Nader Saeivar and Jafar Panahi Reunite for Berlin-Set Drama 'Hijamat'
Director Nader Saeivar and producer Jafar Panahi, the creative force behind the acclaimed 'It Was Just An Accident,' are set to debut their latest collaboration, 'Hijamat,' at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Competing for the prestigious Crystal Globe, the film explores the volatile intersection of tradition and personal identity within a Muslim family living in Berlin. The narrative centers on Kerem, whose secret same-sex relationship is exposed, triggering a profound crisis that threatens to dismantle his family unit and alienate him from his community.
The film features a high-profile ensemble cast, including Kida Khodr Ramadan, Jael Cem Ilhan, Nicolette Krebitz, and Nastassja Kinski. The story focuses heavily on the internal conflict of Kerem’s brother, Murad, who finds himself caught in a precarious position. While Murad attempts to navigate his support for his brother, he faces immense pressure from his father—who maintains deep ties to the local religious leadership—and the rigid expectations of their social circle. This dynamic highlights the broader societal struggle between modern individual expression and conservative cultural preservation.
'Hijamat' represents a significant project for the production team, which includes ArtHood Films and a consortium of international co-producers. By tackling themes of familial duty and the consequences of hidden truths, the film positions itself as a poignant examination of the immigrant experience in contemporary Europe. As the film prepares for its world premiere, it serves as a testament to the ongoing partnership between Saeivar and Panahi, whose previous works have consistently garnered international recognition for their social commentary and emotional depth.
