U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Mike Waltz on Sunday reiterated his push for the international coalition’s security council to pass a resolution condemning the Iranian government’s restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that the Trump administration, alongside Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar, drafted a UN Security Council Resolution to “defend freedom of navigation” in the waterway, through which the Islamic Republic has restricted shipping since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28.

“No country can do what Iran is doing in international waterways,” Waltz told host Martha Raddatz on ABC’s “This Week.”

“We cannot have a conflict between two countries, whether it’s over a border, resources, a nuclear program, where one side responds by holding the entire world’s economies hostage, by throwing sea mines out in international waterways,” he later said. “Can you imagine if a country did that in the Strait of Gibraltar or the [Strait] of Malacca?”

For months, the Iranian military has threatened ships from non-allied countries transiting the passageway. Its forces also laid mines throughout the strait and imposed tolls on ships passing through.

Those moves significantly slowed transit in the waterway, which sits between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. That sparked a global rise in energy prices, with the price of gas above $4.50 as of Sunday, according to AAA.

The U.S. Navy has responded by blockading Iranian ports for weeks. The American military also began escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, but President Trump abandoned the venture a day later after it sparked renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran as well as opposition from American allies in the region, notably Saudi Arabia.

The U.N. resolution, Rubio said, requires Iran to “cease attacks, mining, and tolling” in the strait.

“It demands that Iran disclose the number and location of the sea mines it has laid and cooperate with efforts to remove them, while also supporting the establishment of a humanitarian corridor,” he added.

The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members — the U.S., China, France, Russia and the U.K. — and 10 rotating members.
