(NEXSTAR) – You know Costco for its bulk items, rotisserie chicken, $1.50 food court combo and cheaper gas, among other things, but for many in the U.S., navigating the wide aisles with an oversized cart is just a fantasy.
The warehouse retailer has a presence in all but three states — sorry, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming. In 10 states — Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Vermont — there are three or fewer Costco locations.
Costco appears poised to change that.
During a second-quarter earnings call in March, CEO Ron Vachris said the company aims to open 30 or more warehouses annually over the next five to 10 years, echoing remarks from CFO Gary Millerchip. Roughly half would be new warehouses in the U.S., while the others would be worldwide. Vachris mentioned Mexico, Canada, Asia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand as sites for future warehouses.
He added that while these locations will “maintain … the Costco experience,” they may be more creative than “a standard 25-acre site with 800 [parking spots] and one-level parking decks.”
Costco has already opened new warehouses in Roseville, California, St. George, Utah, and Forney and Liberty Hill, Texas. Two more locations are expected to open soon.
A second warehouse in Visalia, California, was expected to open in April. Officials have since changed that opening date to May 21.
Also originally scheduled to open this month was the New Braunfels, Texas, warehouse. Its opening date is now listed as May 15.

Costco doesn’t list any additional soon-to-open warehouses on its website, but a standalone gas station is expected to open later this year in Mission Viejo, California. Another is anticipated for Hawaii next year.
A new Costco warehouse could be coming to Fresno, California, soon. The location, which aims to replace an existing store, has been in the works for years, Nexstar’s KSEE/KGPE reported in January. The process is ongoing.
In December, officials approved a plan to bring a Costco to Lake St. Louis, Missouri. It would be the sixth in the region, according to Nexstar’s KTVI.
Efforts to bring a Costco to Southborough, Massachusetts; Eagle, Idaho; Silver Spring, Maryland; and Des Plaines, Illinois, continue, local reporting shows. The latter is anticipated to be a business center.
Construction could soon begin on a Costco warehouse in Scottsdale, Arizona, that would be the company’s first location on tribal land. An opening date has not yet been revealed for the store on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land.
Meanwhile, in Florida, a proposed mixed-use project, featuring Costco as an anchor, was abandoned earlier this week. Local reports say the developer is now pursuing housing on the plot instead.
Washington-based Costco has its largest footprint in California with 135 warehouses, followed by Texas at 45, Florida at 35, and its home state at 33.
