It might seem odd that anyone could record an album as first-rate as “Then Again” and then not only shelve it, but forget about it. But not everyone is Rodney Crowell, who has been busy enough following his muse that it hadn’t really reoccurred to him that he had an excellent “lost” album sitting in his archives from 20 years ago, much less that he should finally put it out.

After a timely rediscovery, that abandoned project will finally see daylight, as New West Records issues “Then Again” on June 26. To preview it, Variety has the premiere of the album’s lead track, “Are You One of Us?,” a vocal collaboration with a fellow legend of Americana, the late Guy Clark. Fans of either artist are likely to agree that, apart from Clark no longer being with us, the 2006-vintage track sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday, between its audio crispness and political theme.
