Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned the U.S. and United Arab Emirates (UAE) against military action as talks “progress” on ending hostilities in the Middle East.
“Events in Hormuz make clear that there’s no military solution to a political crisis,” Araghchi said, referencing the U.S. military attempting to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
“As talks are making progress with Pakistan’s gracious effort, the U.S. should be wary of being dragged back into quagmire by ill-wishers,” the Iranian foreign minister added. “So should the UAE.”
“Project Freedom is Project Deadlock,” he concluded, referring to the name President Trump gave to the military effort to accompany commercial ships through the waterway.
In response to American forces guiding vessels through the strait, the Iranian military opened fire on U.S. warships and commercial vessels on Monday, according to U.S. Central Command (Centcom) head Adm. Brad Cooper. The admiral added that U.S. forces returned fire and destroyed six small Iranian boats.
Earlier Monday, Centcom confirmed the transit of two U.S. cargo ships through the Strait of Hormuz and said that Navy-guided missile destroyers are protecting vessels in the Persian Gulf.
The UAE Defense Ministry also reported Monday that Iranian forces fired four cruise missiles into its airspace, the first attacks from Tehran since the ceasefire with the U.S. went into effect last month.
President Trump, meanwhile, told Fox News on Monday that Iranian officials have become “much more malleable” in peace talks, which have been mediated by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his army chief, Asim Munir.
But the president still warned that Iran will be “blown off the face of the Earth” if its forces attack U.S. vessels escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
