Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) on Sunday backed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) after President Trump said Jeffries should be impeached for criticizing the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Voting Rights Act.
On Wednesday, a 6-3 majority of justices struck down Louisiana’s second majority-Black congressional district.
“He is a president that’s drowning in his dismal poll numbers and is hanging on [for] dear life, trying to finger-point and try to discredit a member of Congress who clearly is rising, who clearly has the support of his peers, and who I think called it like it was,” Espaillat said during a Sunday appearance on MS NOW’s “The Weekend.”
“And so, you’ll hear more from him as his polls continue to drop, as they are right now,” added Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Jeffries last week called the Supreme Court ruling “illegitimate” and said it was “designed to undermine the ability of communities of color.”
Trump said the House minority leader should be subject to impeachment over his criticism.
“Hakeem Jeffries, a Low IQ individual, said our Supreme Court is ‘illegitimate.’ After saying such a thing, isn’t he subject to Impeachment? I got impeached for A PERFECT PHONE CALL. Where are you Republicans? Why not get it started? They’ll be doing this to me!” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Sunday.
Jeffries, on the social platform X, reposted Trump’s post with the caption “Jeffries Derangement Syndrome,” a reference to “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” which is a term Trump has applied to people who disagree with him.
Democrats have decried the Supreme Court ruling, calling it a setback for minority voters that will severely impact the country as it pertains to the fairness of future elections.
The NAACP called the high court’s ruling a “devastating blow” to the landmark civil rights legislation.
