South Carolina GOP Gubernatorial Race Tightens as Candidates Split Support

A recent Trafalgar Group survey reveals a highly competitive landscape in the South Carolina Republican gubernatorial primary, with Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson locked in a statistical dead heat. Evette currently holds 19.9 percent of the vote, narrowly edging out Wilson’s 19.4 percent. The race remains fluid, as millionaire Rom Reddy follows closely with 19 percent, while Representatives Ralph Norman and Nancy Mace maintain significant, though trailing, positions at 15.9 percent and 14.6 percent, respectively.

The data indicates a shifting momentum within the electorate. While Evette previously held a more comfortable lead earlier this month, Wilson has successfully narrowed the gap, particularly by gaining traction among voters aged 40 to 64. Conversely, Evette has experienced a notable decline in support among female primary voters, dropping by 9.5 percentage points. These fluctuations highlight the volatility of the contest as candidates vie to succeed outgoing Governor Henry McMaster.

This crowded field suggests that the path to the nomination remains wide open, with no single candidate establishing a clear mandate. The narrow margins—well within the survey's 2.9 percent margin of error—underscore the importance of voter outreach in the final stages of the campaign. As the primary approaches, the ability of these candidates to stabilize their support bases and differentiate their platforms will be critical in determining who emerges as the frontrunner in this high-stakes contest.
