Dan Levy Breaks Down Talking About Catherine O'Hara

Dan Levy is known for many things: his start as an MTV VJ, his role as Professor Thomas Molloy on Sex Education, and his starring roles in films like Good Grief and Happiest Season. You might even know him simply as Eugene Levy's son. But the biggest thing you definitely know Dan from is Schitt's Creek! Cause not only did he star on it, but he also co-wrote, co-created, and show-ran the show—alongside his dad, Eugene.

But now, Dan Levy is stepping away from the iconic father-son pairing with his new show, Big Mistakes. The series features some Canadian gems — Dan Levy, of course, Jack Innanen (Adults), and a musical score by Canadian artist Peaches. It also stars the iconic Taylor Ortega (Welcome to Flatch) and Laurie Metcalfe (Lady Bird). So, in short: a killer cast.

The series is a crime comedy that follows two wildly helpless siblings — a New Jersey pastor (Levy) and his sister (Taylor Ortega) — who are pulled into organized crime after a well-meaning attempt to help their dying grandmother goes disastrously wrong.

Recently, Dan Levy sat down with CBS Sunday Morning to discuss his new show and the legacy that is Schitt's Creek. When asked if Levy will try to live up to Schitt's Creek with Big Mistakes, Levy immediately shook his head, saying, "No. I wouldn't let it in. I don't think you can. And you really have to lock the door on that and almost accept the fact that, if [Schitt's Creek] is the big crown jewel, fabulous. How wonderful! Everything else has to be something that makes me feel good."

Although Dan's new show is set in New Jersey, Dan was interviewed in Ontario, Canada, giving him the chance to discuss his latest project, Big Mistakes, while also reminiscing about his Emmy-sweeping series, Schitt's Creek. And it got emotional when talking about his late co-star, Catherine O'Hara.

Catherine O'Hara, the iconic Canadian comedian behind Moira Rose, passed away suddenly this year at the age of 71, making the journey back to the Schitt's Creek set even more emotional.

As Dan walked through the small town of Goodwood, Ontario— passing landmarks like Café Tropical and Rose Apothecary— he broke down in tears in front of CBS News interviewer Anthony Mason.

Levy said, "It's tough. It's tough being back. I didn't think I'd have quite an emotional reaction." When Mason asked Levy about what was coming up for him, Levy responded, "It's just a lot of memories. A lot of memories with Catherine. It's what you have to hold onto. The memories."
CBS
Mason asked Levy if there would ever be a Schitt's Creek sequel, and Levy was quick to dismiss the idea, saying, "No, not now. No, you can't." When asked if he had considered it before Catherine O'Hara's passing, Levy admitted, "Yeah, I was thinking about it." But as any fan who has watched the show, it's true — the show couldn't be rebooted in any form without Moira Rose.

Levy added, gushing about Catherine O'Hara, "We had the best time. We had the best time. She had the best time. … It's an amazing thing to be a part of something that she loved so much. ... Listen, for someone who is not on the Internet, she knew how to meme!"

And for those passing through Goodwood, Ontario, you can sign a memorial book for Catherine O'Hara in the store that now occupies the same storefront as the Rose Apothecary set.

In the meantime, we have the gift of rewatching Schitt's Creek for the hundredth time and looking forward to Dan Levy's new project, Big Mistakes — which is dropping on Netflix on April 9.
