Disney+ has announced a strategic partnership with the Dutch public broadcaster NPO to produce and distribute a local adaptation of the popular reality competition series 'Werewolves' (titled 'Wolven'). The show, which features a group of villagers attempting to identify secret saboteurs in their midst, will premiere on August 29. It will be broadcast on NPO 1 and simultaneously available for streaming on both NPO Start and Disney+.

This collaboration marks a significant shift in how public broadcasters engage with commercial streaming giants. By co-releasing the series, NPO aims to expand its reach to younger demographics, while Disney+ continues to bolster its library with localized, high-engagement content. The production is being handled by Banijay Benelux’s label, SimpelZodiak, utilizing the established production infrastructure from the show's successful French iteration.

The deal reflects a broader European strategy for Disney+, which has increasingly sought partnerships with free-to-air broadcasters in markets such as Spain, Italy, Germany, and the U.K. By aligning with established public institutions, Disney+ is effectively navigating local regulatory landscapes and cultural preferences while securing high-quality, locally relevant programming. This model serves as a blueprint for how global streamers can integrate into regional media ecosystems to sustain growth and audience relevance.
