House Toth defeats Crenshaw in Texas GOP primary upset by Sarah Fortinsky - 03/04/26 12:13 AM ET by Sarah Fortinsky - 03/04/26 12:13 AM ET Share ✕ LinkedIn LinkedIn Email Email NOW PLAYING Texas State Rep. Steve Toth (R) is projected to pull off a victory in Tuesday’s primary, unseating fourth-term incumbent Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas), according to Decision Desk HQ. Toth’s win all but ensures he will represent the deep-red Texas 2nd Congressional District in Congress next year. Crenshaw, who has at times broken with President Trump, was the only House Republican on the ballot in Texas without an endorsement from the president. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also drew national headlines last week when he threw his support behind Toth. Toth, a staunch conservative, sought to position himself as the more Trump-aligned candidate in the race, blasting Crenshaw for not echoing the president’s unsubstantiated claims of election fraud in the 2020 election and for supporting a bipartisan immigration bill at the end of the Biden administration. But Crenshaw pushed back against Toth’s characterization of his record, telling The New York Times last week , “I’m out there defending Trump in places where Republicans are too scared to go.” Crenshaw has voted consistently in support of Trump’s agenda. A former Navy SEAL who lost his eye in Afghanistan, the congressman has been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine in its war against Russia and has lauded Trump for his intervention in Venezuela. The race drew the attention of many political observers. A pro-Crenshaw super PAC reportedly spent $2 million in ads against Toth, suggesting Crenshaw’s allies saw Toth as a serious threat. Toth’s super PAC, however, spent just $362,000, Punchbowl News reported .
