The Chamber of Secrets will be opened at HBO.
The network has officially greenlit Harry Potter for a second season.
The renewal comes seven months before the debut of the show’s first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The second season is scheduled to begin shooting this fall.
HBO didn’t declare a title for the second season, but the show’s creative team has previously stated they’re planning to spend one season on each book and J.K. Rowling’s second novel is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

In addition, writer Jon Brown (Succession) has been elevated to the position of co-showrunner along with season one showrunner Francesca Gardiner.
“As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish season one by Christmas and to return to production for season two this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum,” Gardiner said in a statement. “I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on Succession through to these recent times together on Harry Potter. Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
Brown added, “It has been a joy to write on Philosopher’s Stone and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Seems you’re never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts.”
Chamber of Secrets is often considered by fans to be the weakest of Rowling’s seven Harry Potter novels. But the show’s creatives have been looking to deftly expand Rowling’s beloved source material and will doubtless find some fresh ways to elevate the story.
One key question is when the second season will debut, especially considering the show faces the ticking clock of its young cast growing up. Since the first season began filming in July 2025, HBO will have spent 17 months on Philosopher’s Stone. If HBO begins filming season two this fall, the network would seem to have just slightly less time to have Chamber ready by the following Christmas.
No word yet on any additional casting or directors for the second season. Mark Mylod serves as executive producer and directed multiple episodes of the first series, which is made by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is also executive produced by Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
