Waymo Acquires Former Apple Proving Ground for $220 Million
Waymo has significantly bolstered its autonomous vehicle testing infrastructure by acquiring a 5,500-acre proving ground in Wittman, Arizona, for $220 million. The facility, previously owned by an Apple-affiliated shell company, was once the centerpiece of Apple’s now-defunct 'Project Titan' automotive initiative. This acquisition provides Waymo with a massive, purpose-built environment featuring high-speed ovals, city-simulated courses, and specialized freeway tracks, dwarfing the company’s existing testing sites in California and Ohio.
This strategic purchase arrives as Waymo enters a phase of rapid commercial scaling. With a fleet currently approaching 4,000 vehicles and plans to integrate thousands more, including new models from Zeekr and Hyundai, the company requires expanded capacity to refine its self-driving software. The Arizona site will be instrumental in conducting rigorous motion control testing, operational training, and complex rider-only simulations, ensuring the safety and reliability of its systems as they deploy across an increasing number of U.S. cities.
The transaction serves as a symbolic bookend to Apple’s exit from the automotive sector earlier this year. While Apple spent billions attempting to develop its own autonomous vehicle, the infrastructure it built has now been absorbed by the current market leader. For Waymo, the acquisition is a practical investment that secures the necessary physical space to maintain its competitive edge, allowing it to accelerate the development of its robotaxi services in key markets like Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin.
