Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) said Tuesday that he was not hearing anything about an upcoming vote to expel him from the House, despite an uptick in calls from his colleagues to expel him in wake of Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) resigning from Congress over sexual misconduct allegations under threat of an expulsion vote.
“I don’t even fall into the category of Swalwell or Gonzales,” Mills told The Hill’s partners at NewsNation on Tuesday.
Mills is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee for allegations of dating violence, campaign finance violations and more. Last year, the House batted down Rep. Nancy Mace’s (R-S.C.) resolution to censure him and remove him from committees by referring the matter to the committee.
But amid the uproar over sexual assault and misconduct allegations against Swalwell and renewed scrutiny of Gonzales, both of whom allegedly had sexual relationships with staff members in violation of House rules, several lawmakers — including Mace and Reps. Andre Carson (D-Ind.), Chris Pappas (D-N.H.) and Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) — called on Mills to resign or be expelled, too.
Mills pushed back on being lumped in with Swalwell and Gonzales.
“I had never been arrested, had never gone to any proceedings, and it was essentially just something where it was a bad breakup. It’s just interesting kind of seeing how you’re guilty by accusation as opposed to the way the rule of law truly works,” Mills said.
Mills’s former girlfriend obtained a retraining order against him last year for harassment following their breakup. And in February 2025, police investigated a physical altercation between Mills and another simultaneous girlfriend in his Washington, D.C., residence, but Mills and the alleged victim later denied that a physical altercation took place. The police department transmitted a report to the U.S. attorney’s office, but Mills was not prosecuted and the matter is no longer being investigated.
“One, I’m not married, so there’s one thing,” Mills said. Mills was separated from his wife and in divorce proceedings at the time the restraining order was granted.
“Two, I’ve never sexually harassed and/or had any complaints by any staffers or interns on the Hill. It’s just not even a fair comparison. This is obviously a political democratic tit for tat.”
Asked about calls to expel Mills on Tuesday morning, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he would look into the status of the Ethics Committee’s investigation.
“With regard to Mills, I’m not sure the status of the Ethics Committee investigation. That’s one of the things I’ll be looking into today,” Johnson told CNN.
