Meta Partners with Reliance for First AI Data Center in India
Meta has officially entered the Indian AI infrastructure market through a strategic partnership with Reliance Industries. The collaboration centers on the development of a 168-megawatt, AI-ready data center located in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This facility, which is expected to be operational within two years, will be powered by renewable energy and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling, aligning with Meta’s sustainability goals. Reliance will manage the full lifecycle of the project, including design, construction, and ongoing operations.
This agreement marks a significant deepening of the existing relationship between the two companies, which began with Meta’s $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020. By securing this infrastructure, Meta is effectively integrating India into its global network of AI computing facilities. To support this expansion, Meta has also finalized contracts for nearly 1 gigawatt of additional renewable energy capacity in India, ensuring that its local operations remain environmentally sustainable while meeting the intense power demands of modern AI workloads.
For India, this deal serves as further validation of its growing status as a global hub for AI infrastructure. The country has seen a surge in data center investments from major tech players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, supported by favorable government policies such as long-term tax exemptions. With India’s data center capacity projected to grow significantly by 2030, this partnership highlights how global tech giants are increasingly looking to Indian conglomerates to provide the physical foundation necessary to scale their artificial intelligence ambitions.
