'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Trailer Breakdown

The day has finally arrived! The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has landed, and it's packed with Easter eggs, character reveals, and left me with tons more questions than answers.
Sony/Marvel
The film, which hits theaters on July 31, 2026, will explore Peter Parker's journey after the life-altering events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. For those who may not remember, in that movie, Spidey asked Dr. Strange to wipe everyone's minds of his existence to protect them, essentially losing all his friendships and relationships in the process.
Sony/Marvel
That "mind wipe" storyline was somewhat influenced by the Spider-Man comic storyline "One More Day." In that story, Aunt May is shot after Peter reveals his identity as Spider-Man, forcing him to make a deal with Mephisto to save her life. That deal includes wiping everyone's mind of his secret identity, and also negates his marriage to Mary Jane.

After "One More Day," the next Spidey comic storyline is "Brand New Day," one of the most controversial Spider-Man sagas in comic history. Since the new film is titled after this comic book run, fans shouldn't be surprised to see key elements from that comic brought to life on screen (many of which we see in the new trailer).

Here's a full synopsis of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, posted by Marvel:
"Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he's devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man. But as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced."
With all that in mind, here is a breakdown of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer:
1.
The trailer starts with Spider-Man watching a social media post from Ned, his former best friend, who no longer remembers him. In the post, Ned and MJ, Spidey's ex-girlfriend, are celebrating their first day at MIT.
Sony/Marvel
This part confused me a bit, since Brand New Day is supposed to take place four years after No Way Home. For those who recall, MJ and Ned get into MIT at the end of No Way Home, so four years later, you'd think they'd have graduated already. So it's possible this scene is a flashback at the beginning of the film. It could also just be Spider-Man watching an older social media clip.

We then get a pretty cool shot of Spidey diving off a building, and see the view from inside his mask as he takes a deep, somewhat depressing breath.
Sony/Marvel
This is a pretty cool shot! I love that they're finding new ways to capture Spider-Man's perspective after all these years.

The trailer follows up this brief intro with a quick catch-up for viewers. We hear Spider-Man explaining to someone (most likely MJ) why they don't remember him. He's holding a letter in his hand, so I think it's safe to assume this voiceover is him reading the letter back to himself. It's also worth noting that we get a shot of his web shooters here, which is important for later.

Following this sobering intro, we see Peter apparently stalking his ex-best friend, and I'm already all emotional.

NGL, it's nice to see Spider-Man living like the poor street-level hero he's often portrayed as in the comics. It was cool seeing him with all the Avengers for the last decade, but THIS is the Spider-Man that die-hard fans were missing. I'm pretty sure this is the same washing machine I had in 2008 when I first moved out of my mother's house.

We also get a quick shot of Spider-Man receiving the Key to the City. It seems like a throw-away scene, but there's a key character (see what I did there?) here. We see Sheila Rivera giving Spidey the key, which makes it appear that she is the mayor of New York. However, the last time we saw her, she was working alongside Mayor Fisk (aka The Kingpin) in Daredevil: Born Again. Kingpin becomes the mayor of NYC in the Daredevil soft reboot, and Sheila is one of his top allies. Does this mean Fisk is impeached, or simply that he lost a reelection? I'm sure the second season of Daredevil: Born Again will touch on this and loosely connect to Brand New Day.
Sony/Marvel
We also see MJ and Ned watching this Key to the City ceremony, and that look in MJ's eyes makes me feel like she's slowly starting to remember Peter/Spidey...or maybe that's just my hope.

Some more obligatory shots of Spider-Man doing spins and flips as he swings through the city follow, and can I just say it's obvi
