Asghar Farhadi made a grand return to Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night with the debut of “Parallel Tales,” his French-language drama starring Isabelle Huppert, earning a 5.5-minute standing ovation.
The acclaimed Iranian auteur blew kisses to the crowd as the audience applauded for the 2-hour and 20-minute drama, which follows several nosy neighbors whose lives intertwine. As the clapping continued, Farhadi hugged his actors Catherine Deneuve and Virginie Efira. His lead Huppert, sporting a dramatic bright-red gown, stood beside him but remained politely smiling during the ovation.
