Mobileye Expands into Robotaxi Operations with 2027 U.S. Launch Plan
Mobileye, the Intel-owned leader in automotive computer vision and driver-assistance technology, has announced plans to launch its own robotaxi service in the United States by 2027. While the company has historically functioned as a technology supplier to major automakers, this move marks a strategic pivot toward becoming a direct operator. The initial rollout will feature a fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles, with an ambitious goal to scale that number to 17,000 units over the subsequent five years.
This expansion represents a significant shift in Mobileye’s business model. By leveraging its existing Moovit ride-hailing platform and its proprietary Mobileye Drive autonomous system, the company aims to gain direct operational experience. CEO Amnon Shashua frames this as a necessary step toward the company’s ultimate goal of achieving full consumer-grade vehicle autonomy. By managing its own fleet, Mobileye intends to accelerate the real-world validation of its technology while showcasing its capabilities to potential partners and the public.
The move creates a complex dynamic, as Mobileye will now compete in the same space as the automakers it currently supplies. However, leadership maintains that this initiative is intended to complement, rather than replace, existing partnerships. The strategy suggests that Mobileye believes the path to widespread autonomous adoption requires a dual-track approach: providing the underlying technology for others while simultaneously proving the viability of the service through its own direct, controlled deployments. This shift will be closely watched by industry analysts to see if Mobileye can successfully balance its role as a neutral technology provider with the demands of running a consumer-facing transportation network.
