Cognizant CEO Challenges AI Job-Loss Narrative, Predicts Workforce Reshaping
Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S. is pushing back against the prevailing narrative that artificial intelligence will lead to a mass extinction of entry-level white-collar jobs. Speaking at Fortune’s COO Summit, Kumar characterized the earlier warnings from industry leaders like Sam Altman and Dario Amodei as "fearmongering." Instead of a total collapse, Kumar anticipates a net increase in job opportunities, noting that Cognizant hired 20,000 entry-level graduates last year and expects that figure to rise by 2026.
While the workforce is not disappearing, it is undergoing a structural transformation. Kumar describes a "flattening" of the traditional corporate pyramid, where AI assumes the responsibilities of middle-management layers. In this new model, entry-level roles will focus on "front-end" tasks—such as using agentic AI tools—while senior leadership remains essential for strategic direction. The middle layers, however, will become significantly leaner as AI takes charge of the flow of work, shifting human focus toward validation, verification, and authentication.
Crucially, Kumar argues that the industry has been mismeasuring AI's impact by relying on "vanity metrics" like token consumption. He contends that companies must stop equating token usage with productivity or billable hours. Instead, he advocates for a shift toward outcome-based business models, where organizations are compensated for the results they deliver rather than the inputs they consume. By focusing on strategic deployment rather than raw output, companies can better navigate the "Great Restructuring" and successfully integrate AI into their core operations.
