The Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights said Monday it would rescind Title IX agreements that six schools made with the federal government under past administrations over gender identity.
The department said the previous administrations’ enforcement of Title IX was “illegal and burdensome” over “improper use of preferred pronouns” or “asking questions about a student’s preferred ‘gender.’”
Title IX is based on sex, and the schools did not violate the law, according to the Trump administration.
The settlements’ cancellation means the school districts will no longer have to engage in trainings on gender-based discrimination, instructions for the use of preferred names and pronouns for transgender students or other resulting policy changes, The New York Times reported.
“Today, the Trump Administration is removing the unnecessary and unlawful burdens that prior Administrations imposed on schools in its relentless pursuit of a radical transgender agenda. While previous Administrations launched Title IX investigations based on ‘misgendering,’ the Trump Administration is investigating allegations of girls and women being injured by men on their sports team or feeling violated by men in their intimate spaces,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey.
“Today is yet another demonstration of the Trump Administration’s commitment to uphold the law, protect our students, and restore common sense. No longer will the federal government force educational institutions to violate the law or punish them for upholding it,” Richey added.
The schools released from their previous Title IX agreements include Cape Henlopen School District, Delaware Valley School District, Fife School District, La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, Sacramento City Unified and Taft College.
The announcement comes as the Trump administration has gone after numerous school districts, universities and Democratic states for allowing transgender individuals onto girls’ sports teams or in girls locker and bathrooms.
