The show's creator, Sam Levinson, discussed how Euphoria will incorporate Fezco into the new season, albeit posthumously.

"Losing Angus was really hard for us as a production. I loved him very deeply," Sam told Variety at the LA premiere.

He also shared that Fezco will be written into Season 3 with scenes where other Euphoria characters are speaking with him on the phone.

Sam opened up more about his relationship with Angus, who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2023, in an interview with the New York Times.

"I really loved him a lot and I fought really hard to keep him clean," Sam told the outlet.

He shared that there was a sober coach available to Angus on set, and that it was important to Sam that he had that kind of support for Angus, as a former addict himself.

"The reason I’m here today is because someone in my life gave me a second chance," Sam told the New York Times. "I wanted to do that same thing for him and for anyone who was struggling with addiction stuff... It was tough because I’m making a show about addiction. But there’s also financial responsibilities. I have to deliver the show, but I wanted to make sure that the cast was safe and healthy. I think if it were maybe another show, they would’ve said, 'You’re fired, we’re just going to move on.' I couldn’t do that. And we were able to get HBO to pay for rehabs."

Even though Angus wasn't able to physically participate in Euphoria Season 3, Sam said the two talked about Fezco's direction often before he died.

"I used to even talk to him about it because I wanted him to stay clean," Sam said. "So I would invite him over and I’d tell him what the plans were for the character. I’d say, Look, he’s been in prison for a few years, so you’ve got to get that yoked prison body. Because I wanted him to start working out and taking care of himself. You know, Season 1, he was supposed to die at the end and I couldn’t do it."

"He needed something to look forward to or else he might get lost in the world," Sam continued. "I wanted him to have something to hold onto, a tangible goal for the future. And then when I heard the news that he had passed away, I was very angry about it, and especially about fentanyl. Losing him made me sit down and think, what story do I really want to tell? What matters in life? And through the soul-searching of that, Season 3 began to crystallize."

"The real world, I can’t control," Sam told the New York Times. "Euphoria I can. So if I couldn’t keep him alive in real life, at least I can do it on the show."

Personally, Angus had always been my favorite part of Euphoria. His role was a complicated one as a drug dealer, which comes with generations of stereotypical depictions. But he infused so much sensitivity and empathy into Fezco that I just wanted the best for both of them.

At the Euphoria Season 3 premiere, Sam also discussed the difficult loss of another star on the show, Eric Dane.

Eric reprises his role as Cal Jacobs in Season 3, even though Sam told him there was "no pressure" to shoot, as Eric was navigating his ALS diagnosis during filming.

"When he showed up, I noticed that his speech was a little slurred," Sam told Variety. “He was a bit self-conscious, and I said, ‘This works perfectly. We’re gonna put five beer bottles in front of you, and you’re about to say all of the shit you would never say if you were sober.’ And we just had a blast shooting ... he just showed up with such grace and dignity. He’s a consummate professional all the way through, and I miss him.”

As far as the future of Euphoria goes, Sam said there are no plans to shoot Season 4 currently.

He told Variety that he writes “every season like it’s the last season” and has “no plans” for another one.
