Cercamon Acquires Sales Rights for Karlovy Vary Entry 'Black Money for White Nights'
International sales agency Cercamon has secured the rights to the tragicomedy "Black Money for White Nights," a Bulgaria-Greece co-production set to make its world premiere in the Crystal Globe Competition at the upcoming Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film is the latest project from the creative duo Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Decho Taralezhkov.
The narrative follows an elderly couple, Marina and Gosha, whose long-held dream of visiting St. Petersburg for the White Nights Festival is shattered by the geopolitical fallout of the Russia-Ukraine war. After a travel agency disappears with their life savings—amassed through years of small bribes—the couple’s personal stability unravels. The film explores the subsequent domestic fallout as a violent confrontation lands Gosha in the hospital, forcing the pair to confront deep-seated betrayals and the fragile foundations of their marriage.
This acquisition highlights the continued relevance of regional European cinema in addressing contemporary geopolitical tensions through intimate, character-driven storytelling. By grounding a global conflict within the domestic sphere of an aging couple, Grozeva and Valchanov provide a poignant look at how macro-political events dismantle individual lives. For Cercamon, the film represents a strategic addition to their festival-focused portfolio, positioning the tragicomedy to capture international attention during its high-profile debut at Karlovy Vary.
