We all know cocaine is a drug.

We all know they snort it a lot in some movies.

And we've all realized they aren't snorting actual cocaine (at least I hope not). But, have you ever wondered what the actors are really snorting?

Well, today is the day you find out!!!

Speaking with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang on the Las Culturistas podcast, Lena Dunham began discussing her HBO series Girls, which ran from 2012 to 2017.

Speaking specifically about a memorable scene from Season 2, Episode 3 ("Bad Friend"), Lena said that what they were ingesting may have added an element to the off-the-cuff dialogue. She shared that they were drinking something similar to the energy drink Celsius for the "alcohol," and then she revealed what the actors used as "cocaine."

In the episode, Hannah (Lena Dunham) tries coke after her editor told her that her writing was too boring. So, in an attempt to write something edgier, she decides to snort cocaine and write about her experience. She does this with Elijah (Andrew Rannells), and they end up snorting lines off a nightclub toilet seat just to get the story.
"We snorted a lot of lactose powder, and you can't know what that does. Andrew and I recently talked about it. We snorted TONS of milk off a toilet that day," said Lena.

She also added, "I know we didn't feel good. We were also dancing in a club. We also arrived at 5 in the morning, so by the time we were sweaty, coked up, and dancing, it was 7:30 a.m. So, this nightlife scene was actually us jacked up on lactose powder, 7:30 a.m., and what happens, happens."

So, there you have it! If you didn't know, lactose powder is a concentrated form of the enzyme lactase. It is used to break down lactose, or milk sugar, into a more digestible form.

It is primarily mixed into dairy products to help prevent gas and bloating for people who have lactose intolerance.

And, for the record, lactose powder is NOT the same as baby formula. While lactose is in breast milk and most standard formulas, neither contains the enzyme lactase. Babies typically produce their own lactase!

I also did some additional research because I assume other things besides lactose powder are used on set. Margot Robbie has said that Vitamin B powder or icing sugar is often used. Jonah Hill also confirmed they use vitamin powder.

In addition, I read that, in some instances, the inside of a straw or rolled-up dollar bill may be coated with petroleum jelly so when the actor "snorts," the powder sticks to the tube instead of entering their nose.
