House Comer on sending US troops into Iran: ‘Sometimes that’s unavoidable’ by Ashleigh Fields - 03/04/26 11:53 AM ET by Ashleigh Fields - 03/04/26 11:53 AM ET Share ✕ LinkedIn LinkedIn Email Email NOW PLAYING House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) on Wednesday said sometimes deploying troops overseas is “unavoidable” while addressing the current situation in Iran following U.S. strikes on the nation over the weekend. “The president has yet to rule that out. I certainly hope not,” Comer told NewsNation’s “ Morning in America ,” referring to the potential of sending troops to Iran. “If there are boots on the ground, I hope they’re not on the ground any longer than the boots on the ground were in Venezuela,” he continued. “But I think that that’s something the president knows that members of Congress certainly hope doesn’t happen.” Comer continued, “But sometimes that’s unavoidable in a situation like this.” Since the initial strikes on Tehran, at least six Americans have been killed and two U.S. embassies abroad have been struck by drones.  The Army has publicly identified four of the six victims. Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor died alongside Capt. Cody Khork of Lakeland, Fla., Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens of Bellevue, Neb., and Sgt. Declan Coady of Des Moines, Iowa.  The other two have not been named. On Wednesday, Comer shared his condolences for the individuals who lost their lives.  “Some had been from Fort Knox in Kentucky, my home state,” he told NewsNation’s Markie Martin. “So, you know, we’re … devastated. And obviously our thoughts and prayers are with the families of anyone that’s been lost or wounded thus far.” President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have signaled that they expect more American casualties.  Hegseth also said the Pentagon hasn’t ruled out putting troops on the ground in Iran.  “You don’t have to roll 200,000 people in there and stay for 20 years. We’ve proven that you can achieve objectives that advance American interests without being foolish,” the Defense chief said during a Monday press briefing. “Now, will we be bold about it?” He added, “Are we going to be decisive about it? Put months and months of planning into what kind of effects we want to achieve? Absolutely.” Add as preferred source on Google Tags Defense Department Donald Trump House Oversight Committee James Comer Pete Hegseth Trump administration U.S. military U.S. strikes on Iran Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
