Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has a central role in decarbonization pathways (see Nature https://doi.org/qwnf; 2025). It tends to be portrayed as a cost-effective way to mitigate the effects of climate change, but many mitigation pathways require a more than hundredfold increase in use of the technology by mid-century.
