Mandalorian and Grogu opens in North America May 22, the beginning of the long Memorial Day weekend.
The announcement came less than a week after Favreau touched down in Las Vegas to attend CinemaCon, the annual gathering of theater owners. “Star Wars made me fall in love with movies,” he told the crowd. “I saw it for the first time with my dad,” he added before sharing the first 17 minutes of the summer event pic.
Favreau, also creator of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. Filoni, a George Lucas protege, was upped to oversee the creative direction of Lucasfilm as president and chief creative officer earlier this year, following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure.
In the Mandalorian saga, the evil Empire has fallen and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.
Mandalorian marks the first Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
