ACCC Mandates Removal of Hazardous Magnetic Toys from Major Marketplaces
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a directive to major e-commerce platforms—including Amazon, eBay, Kogan, and Fruugo—to immediately remove listings for high-powered magnetic toys. The regulator identified these products, which include magnetic chess and battle-style games, as posing severe health risks. If swallowed by children, these small, high-powered magnets can cause life-threatening internal injuries, prompting the ACCC to prioritize their removal from the retail market.
In response to the regulatory pressure, the affected platforms have agreed to purge these items from their inventories and implement safeguards to prevent future listings of similar banned goods. Furthermore, Amazon, Kogan, and Fruugo have initiated refund programs for consumers who previously purchased these items. The ACCC has advised the public to cease using these toys immediately and to contact their respective retailers to facilitate returns and secure refunds.
This intervention highlights the ongoing challenges regulators face in policing third-party marketplace listings for safety compliance. While the platforms have cooperated, the incident underscores the reputational and operational risks associated with hosting third-party sellers who may bypass safety standards. The ACCC has signaled that its investigation remains active, warning that it will pursue further enforcement actions if necessary to ensure consumer safety and market compliance.
