New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman on Wednesday said her “sense” is President Trump would like to “just be done” with the Iran war as negotiations linger.
“Look at his Truth Social feed now, or listen to the roughly 40 minutes that he spent on ‘Squawk Box’ yesterday. … He’s clearly frustrated. He’s voicing that, you know, almost every day,” Haberman said during a Wednesday evening appearance on CNN’s “The Source.”
The correspondent said each side involved in the talks has a different perspective on the potential end to the war, noting Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and U.S. special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff view the situation from one angle while Pakistan and Iran are viewing mediation from another.
“I think Karoline Leavitt is not wrong. They [Kushner and Witkoff] clearly do know who they are talking to. It just doesn’t mean that everything is continuous. And my sense is the president would like to just be done with this, and he has other things he’d like to focus on, but wars are intractable,” she told host Kaitlan Collins.
Vice President Vance was expected to hold talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, earlier this week, but negotiations were pushed back.
On Thursday, the Trump administration announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. The U.S.-Iran ceasefire was also extended indefinitely until Tehran comes to the table with a deal.
Former U.S. officials including former national security adviser John Bolton have said the Iran ceasefire is a “mistake” and bolstering leverage for the Middle Eastern country.
“The country that benefits from the ceasefire is Iran. They have been getting pounded, and now they’ve had two to three weeks of relief from it, and the prospect of more in store if negotiations get started,” Bolton said recently on CNN’s “News Central.”
The Wall Street Journal also labeled the president a “sucker” for twice agreeing to a ceasefire that did not result in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump fired back in defense, arguing that Iran’s navy and air force were severely damaged by U.S. strikes.
