President Trump’s approval rating sank to a new second term low in the latest NBC News poll, amid growing concerns about his handling of the economy.
In the NBC News Decision Desk survey, conducted during the first two weeks of April, 37 percent of Americans say they approve of the president’s overall performance, down from 39 percent in early February and 42 percent in early December.
Trump’s approval rating had been steadily declining throughout his second term, according to the NBC poll conducted by SurveyMonkey, with 45 percent of Americans approving of his handling of the job in April 2025 and June 2025 and 43 percent approving in late August.
The decline in Americans who strongly approve of Trump’s job in office accounts for most of his falling approval rating — 20 percent strongly approve of the president, down from 26 percent one year ago. Meanwhile, the share who “somewhat approve” of the president dipped from 19 percent in last April to 17 percent today.
Similarly, those who say they “strongly disapprove” have been steadily on the rise — now accounting for 50 percent of all respondents, up from 42 percent last April. Meanwhile, 13 percent “somewhat disapprove” of Trump in the latest poll — the same finding from the April 2025 survey.
The latest survey was conducted during a volatile moment in the stock market, which fell to its lowest point all year, as pollsters were in the field, before nearing all-time records amid uncertainty over energy prices and the war with Iran.
Americans’ economic anxiety is reflected in the latest survey. Trump’s approval on the his handling of inflation and cost of living hovered around 40 percent in polls conducted in April 2025, June 2025 and August 2025.
But in the latest survey, Trump’s economic approval rating took a nosedive — falling to 32 percent, with 13 percent strongly approving. Of the two-thirds of respondents who are disappointed with Trump’s handling of the key economic issues, 52 percent say they “strongly disapprove” of the president’s performance.
The survey was conducted on March 30-April 13, 2026, with 32,433 adults nationwide. The margin of error is 1.8 percentage points.
