Met Gala Scandals And Shocking Moments

The Met Gala has brought us some of the most iconic red carpet looks of all time — but also some of the most unhinged celebrity moments ever!
Here are 31 of the biggest Met Gala scandals, snubs, and shocking moments in history:
1.
In a now-infamous video from 2014, Solange Knowles attacked her brother-in-law Jay-Z in an elevator during a Met Gala afterparty. They were separated by a security guard as well as Beyoncé herself. People reported that Solange was "provoked" after an interaction with fashion designer Rachel Roy (who was speculated to be "Becky with the good hair," aka the woman Jay-Z allegedly cheated on Beyoncé with, though Rachel denied this).

Ten days later, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Solange released a joint statement, saying, "As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other, and we have moved forward as a united family."

In 2014, the Met Gala had a red-carpet-crashing incident. Wearing little more than a hot pink mankini, prankster Vitalii Sediuk attempted to streak, but police apprehended him before he could make it to the carpet. He has a history of harassing celebrities on the red carpet, including diving under America Ferrera's dress at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and attempting to kiss Will Smith at the Moscow premiere of Men in Black 3 in 2012.

Three years later, artist Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich crashed the Met Gala red carpet while naked and trapped in a clear box. After reports of an unknown vehicle dropping off a package, police found the box covered in a white sheet in a restricted area. Discovering the artist inside, they ordered him to get out, but he refused. Firefighters had to cut him free of the box, and he was then arrested and charged with criminal trespass, public lewdness, obstructing governmental administration, and disorderly conduct.

The stunt was the fifth installment in Fyodor's performance series, Foundling. A post on his Facebook page said, "While police is making a huge issue out of his 'disorderly conduct and causing panic', it's hard to see any of those on the faces of the security or the hosts. The first thing everyone talked about is a perfectly visible alive person inside, no threat. Even the policemen were showing signs of having fun. If anyone cares about the [box's] fate, it's under arrest as well. After all, it took part in all five performances and has quite travelled around the world." Lena Dunham has been to the Met Gala several times, but she had quite an infamous Met Gala experience in 2016. In her Lenny Letter newsletter, she said, "I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, 'That's a marshmallow. That's a child. That's a dog.' It wasn't mean — he just seemed confused. The vibe was very much like, 'Do I want to fuck it? Is it wearing a...yep, it's wearing a tuxedo. I'm going to go back to my cellphone.' It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, 'This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.'"

Following backlash, Lena apologized to Odell. In a since-deleted Instagram post, she said, "I owe Odell Beckham Jr an apology. Despite my moments of bravado, I struggle at industry events (and in life) with the sense that I don't rep a certain standard of beauty and so when I show up to the Met Ball surrounded by models and swan-like actresses it's hard not to feel like a sack of flaming garbage. This felt especially intense with a handsome athlete as my dinner companion and a bunch of women I was sure he'd rather be seated with. But I went ahead and projected these insecurities and made totally narcissistic assumptions about what he was thinking, then presented those assumptions as facts."

She continued, "I feel terrible about it. Because after listening to lots of valid criticism, I see how unfair it is to ascribe misogynistic thoughts to someone I don't know AT ALL. Li
