UNCW Coach Nicole Woods Recovers After Near-Drowning Rescue

UNC Wilmington women's basketball coach Nicole Woods is on the road to recovery after a harrowing near-drowning incident at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. While attempting to rescue her eight-year-old nephew from a powerful rip current on May 21, Woods was pulled under the water. The coach, an experienced swimmer, lost consciousness after successfully pushing her nephew toward a bystander who had entered the water to assist.

The rescue effort involved a coordinated response from three civilians—Ryan Gillespie, Giuseppe Marturano, and Dashaun Brown—who acted quickly to reach the pair. Upon arrival, emergency responders found Woods submerged and unresponsive. She required five minutes of chest compressions and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to restore her heartbeat. After spending time on a ventilator in the ICU, Woods has since been cleared of cognitive impairment and is expected to make a full recovery.
