TV shows are often canceled for reasons like low viewership, high production costs, or simply running their course — but sometimes cancellations happen for serious reasons, like major controversies involving the cast.

Here are 17 shows that were canceled because of drama involving the star or the cast.

1.

On March 19, ABC canceled Season 22 of The Bachelorette after a video emerged of its star, Taylor Frankie Paul, appearing to be involved a domestic violence situation with her ex, Dakota Mortensen, in front of their son in 2023.

While few details were shared, a rep for the Draper City Police Department told People that "allegations have been made in both directions" and that "contact was made" with those involved on Feb. 24 and 25.

In response, Taylor's rep said she is "very grateful for ABC's support as she prioritizes her family’s safety and security," adding that Taylor "is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm."

Dakota denied the claims in a separate statement, calling them "baseless" and saying he was focused on their son's safety.

In 2018, ABC canceled Roseanne, the follow-up series to the show of the same name, after its lead star, Roseanne Barr, posted a racist tweet likening Valerie Jarrett, an adviser under former president Barack Obama, to an ape.

In a statement, the network called her comments "abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values," and later, the show killed Roseanne off and renamed itself The Connors.

Roseanne later claimed the tweet was "a joke" and has continued to defend it in the years since, telling Variety last year, "The way I feel about it is that God told me to do what I did, and it was a nuclear bomb ... So whatever."

TMZ reported the man had served nearly 10 years in prison for molesting a child allegedly related to June. She denied the allegations, saying, "It isn't true. I promise my kids r #1 priority over anything else and I would never put them in danger."

Meanwhile, Alana Thompson — aka Honey Boo Boo — later admitted she had mixed feelings about the cancellation, saying she was both "happy" and "sad" the show ended. "I was sa-happy," she told Oprah.

Actor Anthony Rapp alleged Kevin assaulted him at a party when he was 14 and Kevin was 26. "I still to this day can't wrap my head around so many aspects of it," he told BuzzFeed News. "It's just deeply confusing to me."

Kevin responded by calling the story "horrific," adding that he didn't remember it but apologized "for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior."

Netflix ultimately wrote out Kevin's character to focus on Robin Wright's Clair Underwood and ended the series after its sixth season.

A 2022 lawsuit later declared that Kevin didn't sexually abuse Anthony.

FX announced it was ending its overall deal with Louis, canceling his shows and removing him from projects like Better Things, Baskets, One Mississippi, and The Cops. His show, Louie, which had been on an extended hiatus since 2015 after its 2010 debut, also appeared to be affected, as it never returned for its much-discussed sixth season.
