President Trump launched Wednesday by saying he’s ready to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell if he does not step down when his term is up in a month.
In an interview on Fox Business Network, Trump also said the Justice Department probe into Powell over construction at the Fed’s headquarters would not end. “I hate to be controversial,” he said. Powell has said he would lead the fed until a successor is confirmed.
It’s a busy day on Capitol Hill.
The House is set to start floor debate on the renewal of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Section 702, which expires Monday. But even passage of the rule, the first procedural hurdle, is in question.
The House Budget Committee will question Office of Management and Budget Chair Russ Vought on the Trump administration’s proposed 2027 budget.
The week is already a chaotic one, as a second wave of the “Me Too” movement has arrived in Congress, with Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) resigning over sexual misconduct allegations. Swalwell is under investigation in Los Angeles and New York. And Democrats are racing to distance themselves from him.
And a growing number of Senate Republicans are urging the Trump administration and Pentagon to provide more details on how it plans end to the war in Iran.
President Trump on Wednesday will hold a policy meetings. First lady Melania Trump will visit Capitol Hill this afternoon to talk about foster care reform. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will brief at 1 p.m.
