Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Thursday said he did not know if convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein spied for anybody before adding that there was no evidence in the Epstein files that the disgraced financier was a spy.
Fox News’s Jesse Watters, the host of “Jesse Watters Primetime,” asked Blanche who “was Epstein spying for.” Blanche replied that “nobody’s ever said that.”
“I have no idea if he was a spy,” Blanche added after Watters pressed him further. “All I know is that we don’t have any evidence in the Epstein files that the FBI collected over 15 years that suggest that, Jesse. I wasn’t –– I don’t know. I wasn’t part of the original prosecution team. Neither was Attorney General [Pam] Bondi.”
Blanche went on to praise President Trump and said he was the “only president that’s held Mr. Epstein accountable.” He referred to Trump’s first term and how his administration prosecuted Epstein and then claimed that Trump’s current administration “released all the files,” though the Department of Justice (DOJ) previously said 3 million out of 6 million pages of records in the files were released. Several pages were withheld due to redactions or because they were duplicate files.
“And no matter how much criticism people want to make about the Epstein files, that is indisputable,” Blanche added. “It’s indisputable that nobody talked about the Epstein files for four years during Biden. Four years. And so when President Trump said, ‘Let’s release the Epstein files and the law was passed that allowed us to legally do it, we did it.”
Watters replied that he was “not sure you totally get what people feel about that” before he moved on with his show.
The possibility that Epstein worked as a spy for a foreign country has been a point of debate. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asked that a questioner “not waste our time” while responding to an inquiry about Poland’s probe into potential links between Epstein and Russian intelligence, according to Reuters.
News outlets from Drop Site and Al Jazeera have also indicated possible links to Epstein and Israel, suggesting that he was an asset for Mossad. The DOJ has not confirmed if Epstein was a spy, though some of the DOJ’s documents, including an FBI memo, claimed that Epstein “was a co-opted Mossad agent” or “trained as a spy.”
Blanche has sought to distance himself from the Epstein files. He defended Bondi’s handling of the files’ release but said the files “should not be a part of anything going forward” at DOJ.
Blanche’s appearance on Fox News came hours after Trump fired Bondi. Some Democrats have argued that Bondi was fired as if to prevent her from testifying about her handling of the Epstein files’ release. The House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Bondi in March.
“She will not escape accountability and remains legally obligated to appear before our Committee under oath,” Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the committee, said after Bondi’s firing. “She must answer for her mishandling of the Epstein files and the special treatment she has given [Epstein associate] Ghislaine Maxwell.”
