GAO Report Exposes Systemic Failures at ICE’s Camp East Montana Facility

A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has revealed severe operational failures and mismanagement at the Camp East Montana immigration detention facility in Texas. The investigation highlights that a rushed construction process, coupled with the selection of an inexperienced contractor, led to hazardous living conditions, inadequate medical oversight, and significant financial waste. The facility, which became the nation’s largest immigration detention center, was plagued by security lapses, including a missing firearm and an escape incident, as well as a tuberculosis outbreak caused by improper health screening protocols.

The report underscores a pattern of poor federal oversight, noting that the facility was opened before construction was finalized and without the mandatory inspections required by ICE policy. Furthermore, the contract structure resulted in the loss of millions of taxpayer dollars, as the government paid for maximum-capacity services—such as meals and staffing—even when the detainee population was significantly lower.
