Deezer Launches Cross-Platform Tool to Detect AI-Generated Music
Streaming service Deezer has launched a new, free online tool designed to identify AI-generated tracks across major music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. The tool, which supports 27 languages and integrates with 20 different streaming services, allows users to scan their personal playlists to determine if they contain synthetic content. This initiative marks a significant escalation in Deezer’s strategy to combat the proliferation of AI music, positioning the company as a leader in transparency within the digital audio industry.
The urgency behind this move is underscored by data from Deezer, which reports that approximately 44% of new music uploaded to its platform is now AI-generated. Despite this massive volume—totaling roughly two million tracks per month—actual listener engagement with these songs remains marginal, accounting for only 1% to 3% of total streams. Furthermore, the company notes that a vast majority of these AI-generated streams are associated with fraudulent activity, leading to widespread demonetization efforts by the platform.
This development highlights a growing divide in how streaming services approach generative AI. While competitors like Spotify and Apple Music have largely focused on tagging or monitoring, Deezer has adopted a more aggressive stance by actively removing AI tracks from recommendations and editorial playlists. By offering its detection technology to the public and potentially considering stricter supplier policies, Deezer is pushing for industry-wide standards. This move not only serves as a consumer-facing feature but also signals a broader shift toward protecting the integrity of human-created music in an increasingly automated streaming landscape.
