Alert issued for pizza, pork rinds sold nationwide over salmonella risk

(NEXSTAR) – You may want to check your freezer and pantry. Federal regulators have issued a health alert for several pizza and pork rinds over possible salmonella contamination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the public health alert on Thursday, warning that multiple meat and poultry products with dairy ingredients could be contaminated.

According to the FSIS, the FDA discovered that several regulated establishments had received ingredients made with dry milk powder that had been recalled.

There have been no confirmed illnesses linked to the products, which are listed below, but the concern over salmonella infections remains.

Infections are commonly associated with diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. Symptoms can begin between six hours and six days after you’ve ingested the bacteria. Most people are able to recover without receiving treatment within four to seven days.

Illnesses may be more severe for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Some may require medical treatment or hospitalization, the CDC explains.

Infections can only be diagnosed with a laboratory test of a person’s stool, body tissue or fluids.

The health alert, as of Sunday, list eight different products, but the FSIS says it expects more “products will be identified as this ingredient recall progresses.”

The table below details the products currently linked to the FSIS’s health alert. All were sold nationwide, except for the Culinary Circle pizza, which was only available in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.
