Crockett backing Allred in Texas runoff

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Wednesday said she’s backing former Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) in the runoff election against former Democratic Rep. Julie Johnson (Texas).

“Colin has the record, the grit, and the heart to stand up for working families and communities under attack by this administration. He will fight to abolish ICE and go toe to toe with Donald Trump to stop his extreme agenda,” Crockett said in a Wednesday statement.

“I’ve seen Colin’s fight firsthand. We worked together to bring hundreds of millions in federal investments to North Texas for affordable housing, health care, and transportation,” she added.

Allred dropped out of the Democratic Senate primary for the state earlier this year to back Crockett, who unsuccessfully ran for the party nomination against Texas State Rep. James Talarico (D).

Talarico bested Crockett by 144,512 votes, according to DDHQ.

Crockett originally raised concerns about Democratic voters being prevented from casting ballots at their traditional precincts but ultimately conceded in the race and threw her support behind Talarico as the party nominee.

Now, she’s supporting Allred, an ex-NFL player, in his bid to return to the House.

“Colin doesn’t just talk about fighting for the community that raised him. He wins. That’s why I’m proud to stand with him,” Crockett said in her Wednesday statement.

The runoff between Allred and Johnson was partially driven by the newly drawn congressional maps in the state.

Allred previously represented Johnson’s district until he exited to launch an unsuccessful 2024 bid for Senate. He decided in February to run against her in the newly drawn 33rd Congressional District.
