President Trump answers questions in the Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, D.C., to discuss the war in Iran on Monday, April 6, 2026.

President Trump sent a warning Wednesday that any country that supplies Iran with military weapons will face a 50 percent tariff on goods sold to the United States.

“A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “There will be no exclusions or exemptions!”

The warning comes less than a day after a two-week ceasefire deal was struck between the U.S. and Iran if Tehran allows the Strait of Hormuz to reopen fully.

The deal came several hours after Trump made the extraordinary threat to destroy Iran’s “whole civilization” if a deal was not made. The eleventh-hour ceasefire came after conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The president, who announced the deal on social media less than two hours before his 8 p.m. deadline Tuesday, said it was agreed to because “we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

But just what those objectives are remain murky as Trump and administration officials continue to move the goal posts on what needs to happen for the war to end.

Trump has been adamant from the start that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and that that goal had been achieved but Iranians have not relayed that notion.

A 10-point proposal was received from Iran that Trump said is “workable.” The Iranian plan includes opening the strait as well as guarantees that the country would not be attacked again and the lifting of all sanctions as well as ending fighting by Israel in Lebanon.

“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” he wrote. “On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution.”
