Xreal Launches Budget-Friendly 'xbx' Smart Glasses for Portable Media
Xreal has introduced a new sub-brand, "X By Xreal" (xbx), aimed at making high-quality wearable displays more accessible to the average consumer. The debut product, the a01 glasses, is set to launch in the US this July with a competitive price point of $299. Weighing just 62 grams, these glasses are designed to function as a lightweight, external display for smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles, allowing users to consume media on a virtual large screen without the physical strain of looking down at handheld devices.
Technically, the a01 prioritizes comfort and visual clarity, featuring 1600 nits of brightness and HDR10 support. By offloading processing power to the connected device, the glasses eliminate the need for an onboard battery, significantly reducing weight. While they are not intended for mobile augmented reality use, they are compatible with Xreal’s Beam Pro, which adds 3DoF tracking and access to the Google Play Store, bridging the gap between a simple display and a more interactive computing experience.
This move represents a strategic shift in the wearable market. While tech giants like Meta and Apple are racing to pack complex sensors and heavy processors into "face computers," Xreal is doubling down on a niche, content-focused approach. By prioritizing wearability and affordability, the company is attempting to solve the primary barrier to mass adoption: the physical discomfort of bulky hardware. This launch, coupled with their ongoing collaboration with Google and Qualcomm on the more advanced Project Aura, positions Xreal as a key player in the evolution of lightweight, display-centric eyewear.
