Pacific Fusion has reached a critical technical milestone with the successful testing of its latest pulser module prototype. The device, which is roughly the size of a shipping container, demonstrated the ability to discharge 440 gigawatts of power in an 80-nanosecond burst. This achievement has triggered a new tranche of funding for the company, which has already secured over $1 billion in Series A capital. By utilizing a milestone-based funding model common in the biotech industry, Pacific Fusion aims to maintain operational focus on engineering goals rather than perpetual fundraising.

The company is betting on inertial confinement fusion, a method that uses high-intensity electrical pulses to compress fuel pellets until atoms fuse and release energy. Unlike the laser-based approach utilized by the National Ignition Facility, Pacific Fusion’s design relies on an array of electrical switches and capacitors. The demonstration plant will eventually integrate 156 full-scale pulser modules to achieve the necessary compression. The recent prototype test confirms that the company’s modular design is viable for scaling, providing the technical validation needed to move forward with construction.

This development marks a significant shift in the fusion sector as Pacific Fusion prepares to break ground on its demonstration power plant this summer. The company’s ultimate objective is to achieve "facility breakeven," a state where the plant generates more electricity than it consumes to operate. While the industry remains highly competitive, Pacific Fusion’s strategy of bypassing traditional laser-based methods in favor of scalable, electrical-pulse technology positions it as a key player in the race to deliver clean, limitless energy to the grid.
