Public Trust in CDC Declines Sharply Amid Federal Health Agency Overhaul

A recent survey conducted by Harvard University and the de Beaumont Foundation reveals a significant erosion of public confidence in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As of early 2026, only 50 percent of Americans report trusting the agency’s health recommendations, a dramatic decrease from the 77 percent recorded just one year prior. Notably, only 12 percent of respondents expressed a high level of trust in the organization, signaling a profound shift in how the public perceives federal health guidance.

This decline in institutional trust coincides with aggressive restructuring efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the current administration. Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has overseen the departure of numerous veteran vaccine scientists and senior leaders, while simultaneously distancing the CDC from international partners like the World Health Organization. Policy shifts—including revisions to childhood vaccination recommendations and changes to federal dietary guidelines—have faced intense scrutiny from the scientific and medical communities, who warn that these actions may compromise long-term public health outcomes.

The polling data highlights a deepening partisan divide regarding the future of federal health agencies. While Republican support for the CDC has seen a slight uptick, trust among Democrats and Independents has plummeted. Despite these institutional fractures, the survey suggests that the public still maintains faith in individual healthcare providers, such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. This distinction indicates that while the perceived credibility of federal regulatory bodies has been severely damaged, the foundational relationship between patients and their personal medical practitioners remains largely intact.
