TOPEKA (KSNT) – A recall is now in effect for multiple snack mix products over concerns they may be contaminated with salmonella.
John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc., of Elgin, Ill., announced this week a voluntary recall of several snack mixes sold at retail stores under the brand names Fisher, Squirrel Brand, Southern Style Nuts, and Good & Gather, a private-label brand sold at Target. The products are being recalled as a precautionary measure over concerns that a seasoning blend used in the mixes may be contaminated with salmonella.
The company said the seasoning blend, which was provided by a third-party supplier, contained milk powder that was at the center of a previous recall.
“The affected seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella prior to use; however, the Company is taking this action as a precautionary measure because of the potential that these products may contain the presence of salmonella,” reads a portion of the recall alert issued by John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc.
As of Wednesday, the company had not received any reports of illnesses related to the potentially contaminated nut mixes.

Symptoms of salmonella infections can present up to six days after ingesting contaminated food. Diarrhea, fever, vomiting and stomach cramps are common, and severe symptoms include bloody diarrhea (or diarrhea that lasts for more than three days), fever of over 102 degrees F, frequent vomiting that prevents the ingestion of liquids, and any sign of dehydration.
Those with weakened immune systems, children under 5 years old and adults over 65 years old may experience more severe illness.
