TIFF Announces Christopher Nolan Retrospective Ahead of 'The Odyssey' Launch

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced a comprehensive retrospective of Christopher Nolan’s filmography, titled "Christopher Nolan: Grand Designs." Running from July 8 to August 20 at the TIFF Lightbox, the series will showcase all 12 of the Oscar-winning director’s feature films. In a nod to Nolan’s well-known commitment to celluloid, the screenings will be presented exclusively in 35mm and 70mm film formats.

This retrospective serves as a lead-up to the North American theatrical release of Nolan’s next project, "The Odyssey," scheduled for July 17. The program includes a deep dive into his career, from his 1998 debut "Following" to his 2023 blockbuster "Oppenheimer." To celebrate the cultural impact of the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, the festival will also host a special screening of Greta Gerwig’s "Barbie" immediately preceding "Oppenheimer" on July 18. While Nolan is not expected to attend, the event will kick off with a live recording of the popular film podcast "The Big Picture."

Beyond the Nolan showcase, TIFF is expanding its seasonal programming with a new series titled "Drawn Universes: Visions in Animation." Curated by acclaimed Japanese animation auteur Masaaki Yuasa, this series is set for late 2026 and aims to highlight both the historical pillars of anime and contemporary creators pushing the boundaries of the medium.

These initiatives underscore TIFF’s strategy of blending high-profile auteur retrospectives with diverse, global programming. By pairing a massive commercial draw like Nolan with specialized curation from figures like Yuasa, the festival reinforces its status as a premier destination for both mainstream cinephiles and enthusiasts of niche animation. These events not only build anticipation for upcoming major releases but also solidify the cultural legacy of the directors involved.
