SAG-AFTRA members have officially ratified a new four-year collective bargaining agreement with major Hollywood studios, signaling a period of labor stability for the industry. The deal passed with overwhelming support, as 91.4% of voting members approved the terms. While voter turnout reached 19.3% of the eligible membership, the decisive margin reflects a broad consensus among performers regarding the necessity of the updated contract.

A central component of the agreement addresses the integration of artificial intelligence in film and television production. The contract establishes strict criteria for the use of synthetic actors, stipulating that producers may only utilize AI performers if they provide "significant additional value" beyond what a human actor or their digital likeness could offer. To ensure compliance, the union has secured arbitration provisions designed to restrict AI replicas to rare, specific edge cases, effectively creating a safeguard against the wholesale replacement of human talent.

Beyond technological regulations, the agreement includes a significant structural change: the merger of the union’s two pension funds. This consolidation is intended to streamline administrative operations and bolster the long-term financial health of retirement benefits for members. By addressing both the existential threat of generative AI and the practicalities of pension management, this contract serves as a foundational framework for how labor unions in the creative sector will navigate the ongoing digital transformation of entertainment production.
