Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, Waymo, is set to introduce its latest robotaxi, the Ojai, to public streets in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. Unlike previous iterations that utilized modified consumer vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica or Jaguar I-Pace, the Ojai is a purpose-built autonomous platform. Featuring a spacious, modular cabin designed for easier cleaning and improved accessibility, the vehicle is equipped with a sophisticated sensor suite comprising 13 cameras, six radar systems, and four lidar units to navigate complex urban environments.

The Ojai represents a strategic shift for Waymo, as it aims to scale operations from its current 11 US markets to at least 20 new regions, including international hubs like London and Tokyo. By utilizing a platform engineered specifically for autonomy, Waymo hopes to overcome historical technical hurdles, such as operating in harsh winter climates. The vehicle’s design emphasizes operational efficiency, featuring faster charging capabilities and a modular architecture that simplifies maintenance and repairs.

Notably, the Ojai is manufactured by Zeekr, a sub-brand of the Chinese automotive giant Geely. While the vehicle shells are produced in China, Waymo integrates its proprietary autonomous hardware and software at its facilities in the United States. This partnership highlights the growing intersection of global automotive manufacturing and American AI development. As Waymo works toward its goal of producing tens of thousands of driverless-ready vehicles annually, the Ojai serves as the cornerstone of its ambitious, long-term growth strategy despite recent operational setbacks regarding weather-related navigation and highway safety.
