The Teochew-language family drama 'Dear You' has become a breakout sensation in the Chinese film market, prompting international distributor Trinity CineAsia to acquire rights for the U.K., Ireland, and France. Directed by Lan Hongchun, the film has defied industry expectations by grossing approximately $250 million—nearly 120 times its $2 million production budget—since its April 30 release. This performance marks a significant bright spot for the Chinese box office, which has otherwise struggled with a 40 percent year-on-year decline.

The film’s success is largely attributed to organic word-of-mouth and deep cultural resonance. Shot with non-professional actors and rooted in the history of the Chaoshan region, the narrative follows a young man’s journey to Thailand to uncover the truth about his grandfather’s past. With a 9.2 rating on the review platform Douban, the film has demonstrated remarkable longevity, consistently outperforming major international blockbusters in the Chinese market. Its authenticity is further bolstered by the inclusion of Thai actress Usha Seamkhum, bridging the cultural gap between the Chaoshan diaspora and their historical migration patterns.

This acquisition highlights a growing appetite for culturally specific, high-quality regional storytelling in Western markets. By securing 'Dear You,' Trinity CineAsia aims to tap into the significant Asian diaspora communities in Europe, providing them with a rare opportunity to see their heritage reflected on the big screen. The film’s trajectory serves as a case study for how modest, character-driven projects can achieve massive commercial success when they prioritize authentic cultural narratives over traditional blockbuster formulas.
