The Pitt is not really a show known for happily ever afters, but a recent casting decision has gutted fans in particular.

Supriya Ganesh, who plays resident Dr. Samira Mohan, will be exiting The Pitt after season 2. Dr. Mohan has been a series regular since the first season, and fans have connected with the care and empathy she displays in the hectic Pittsburgh emergency department, especially with senior patients.

But fans were given an exciting nugget amidst the Supriya news: Dr. Parker Ellis (played by Ayesha Harris) will become a series regular. Dr. Ellis is currently a standout on the night shift team.

Ayesha expressed her excitement about her promotion on Instagram: "Dr. ELLIS got student loans to pay off, we gotta work a double shift! Lol Been wanting to share this for a while now..."

While the news of more Dr. Ellis in season 3 is promising, it's Supriya's exit that is sending shockwaves through The Pitt fandom, with many saddened that another woman of color is leaving the show after such a short tenure.

Dr. Collins (played by Tracy Ifeachor) was written out of The Pitt after season 1. The show's executive producer, John Wells, said the reasoning behind that decision is that The Pitt takes place in a teaching hospital. "And if you’re a fourth-year resident in a teaching hospital, your time there is done at the end of that year ... people don't stay at these hospitals forever," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Fans expressed their sadness about the loss of Dr. Mohan — and excitement for more Dr. Ellis — on Twitter:

"The 'revolving door' approach to a teaching hospital is bold, but losing Dr. Mohan is a heavy hit for the emotional core of the show. Her Season 2 development was top-tier. That said, Parker Ellis moving to the forefront is a smart move—Ayesha Harris has been stealing scenes since Season 1. #ThePitt #HBOMax"

"No Dr. Mohan in Season 3?? Yeah ‘The Pitt’ just lost a big piece of its soul"

"I definitely saw this coming. The character was really weird written this season, it felt like a farewell"

"Dr. Samira Mohan was one of the most powerful and captivating characters on The Pitt. Supriya brought genuine depth, intensity, and heart to every single scene. What a massive loss for Season 3. They’d better write her out with the dignity and respect she deserves."

"Damn, Dr. Mohan was one of the strongest parts of the show — Supriya brought real depth and fire to that role. Sad to see her go, but it makes sense story-wise with residency ending. Hoping they give her a strong send-off and Ayesha Harris kills it stepping up. Still locked in for S3 though"

"Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye You were bigger than the whole sky"

"the worst possible news and the best possible news in the same announcement, my neck hurts from the whiplash"

@definitelybromo / Via x.com

"Extremely happy for Ayesha cause I love Dr. Ellis and we NEED a black doctor as a series regular, but very bummed about this because Samira is a fantastic character. Supriya will go on to do some great things though, I’m sure of that!!"

"SUPRIYA TELL THEM ITS NOT APRIL 1ST ANYMORE"

"this is what it feels like to lose and win at the same time…"

It isn't clear if or how these casting shifts will be written into season 2 of The Pitt, which wraps up on April 16.
