The third episode of the Apple TV+ series 'Pluribus' features a visually striking flashback sequence set in a Norwegian ice hotel. While the scene appears to be filmed in a sub-zero, frozen environment, the production was actually executed on a soundstage in the Canary Islands. Production designer Denise Pizzini and cinematographer Paul Donachie faced the significant challenge of creating a realistic, icy aesthetic without the logistical nightmares of filming in a real glacial location.

To achieve the look of authentic ice, the design team utilized Styrofoam structures coated in plaster and embedded with light-reflecting crystals. Achieving the correct lighting was equally complex; the team experimented with various translucent materials and LED strip lighting to mimic the cold, blue glow typical of real ice hotels. To enhance the illusion, the production incorporated atmospheric haze, special effects snow, and digital breath effects for the actors, ensuring the environment felt convincingly frigid on screen.

Beyond the set design, the sequence is notable for its technical ambition: a 360-degree, single-take shot. Donachie choreographed the camera movement to follow the actors, Rhea Seehorn and Miriam Shor, as they navigated the room. This decision necessitated that every corner of the set be meticulously detailed, as the camera’s continuous path left no room for hidden equipment or unfinished areas. This blend of practical craftsmanship and complex cinematography highlights the evolving standards of immersion in modern prestige television.
