President Trump departed China on Friday after a two-day summit with President Xi Jinping, that underscored dueling priorities and resulted in a potentially steadier relationship but no apparent major business deals. He’s headed back to Washington now, with a stopover for fuel in Alaska.
Trump was overheard saying Xi would gift Trump some roses for the White House Rose Garden. And he reiterated that the Chinese leader would visit the U.S. in September.
Hours after Trump left, the Chinese Foreign Ministry called for the end to the war in Iran.
“There is no point in continuing this conflict which should not have happened in the first place. To find an early way to resolve the situation is in the interest of not only the U.S. and Iran, but also regional countries and the rest of the world,” a ministry spokesperson told reporters.
Meanwhile, CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled Thursday to Cuba to meet with officials amid negotiations.
Cuba’s top diplomat in the U.S., Lianys Torres Rivera, told The Hill the country is sticking to its red lines amid faltering negotiations it says have made “no progress,” and a looming threat from Trump to invade the nation.
Friday is the final day of Jerome Powell’s four-year term as Federal Reserve chair.
It’s a quieter day on Capitol Hill, with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll set to testify on the Army budget amid the war in Iran.
