California Democrat calls Virginia Supreme Court ruling on redistricting ‘disgraceful’

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Sunday called a recent Virginia Supreme Court ruling rolling back redistricting in the state “disgraceful,” saying the court “suckered the people of Virginia.”

“So, what the Virginia Supreme Court did was not only wrong, it was disgraceful. They basically said, ‘Hey, Virginia, spend all this taxpayers’ money holding an election, do all this stuff and oh, by the way, just kidding, that election didn’t count,’” Lieu told CBS News’s Margaret Brennan.

“The court could have stopped this by not having the election in the first place. They suckered the people of Virginia. It was a complete disgrace,” he added.

On Friday, the Virginia Supreme Court tossed the state Democrats’ redistricting referendum, ruling 4-3 that it didn’t go along with proper procedures and dealt a significant political blow to the party.

The decision shot down the state’s new congressional map that would’ve handed Democrats a 10-1 tilt in the Old Dominion. The ruling reinforces the 6-5 map.

“This violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it null and void,” Justice Arthur Kelsey wrote for the majority.

The decision might be incredibly important this upcoming November in the battle for the House, in which Democrats hope to lock down the majority again and push back against President Trump during the second half of his second term.

The House is currently divided by a slim margin, with Republicans at 217 seats and Democrats at 212.
